Learning Outcomes : Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: • solve basic problems of radiation-matter interaction (applying Bohr conditions, De Broglie equation, Planck s equation, Einstein s photoelectric equation). • describe the structure of the atom based on modern theories. • determine the electronic structure of atoms by applying relevant rules (minimum energy, Pauli principle, Hund s rule). • utilize the Periodic Table to predict the properties and electronic structure of elements. • draw the Lewis structure for molecules/ions and predict their geometry. • apply Valence Bond theory and Molecular Orbital theory to simple molecules/ions. • predict the macroscopic properties of compounds based on intermolecular forces. • have practiced applying good laboratory practices. • apply basic physical and chemical processes at a laboratory level.
