The course aims at deepening insight into the theoretical and methodological framework of participatory planning, as well as participation methods that can be used in decision-making processes related to: (a) spatial planning problems (planning studies at different spatial scales); (b) sectoral planning problems (environment, transport, energy, tourism, locational choices of infrastructure projects, etc.); and (c) developmental planning problems (developmental studies at various spatial scales). Knowledge gained can be applied to a wide range of planning problems, in which participatory approaches are meant as tools for dealing with complexity and uncertainty of planning problems and a means for conflicts’ resolution; while also constitute an obligation, deriving from the legislative framework in various fields of application. The theoretical part of the course focuses on the following thematic sections: Evolution of the Concept of Participation. Getting insight into the Concept of Participation. Theoretical and Methodological Background of Participatory Planning. Classical (Face-to-Face) Participation Methods. ICT-enabled Participatory Processes. Examples of the Application of Participatory Processes in Planning Processes. The applied part aims at consolidating the theoretical knowledge as well as utilizing methods and tools of participatory planning. This part includes an in-depth study of selected participatory planning methods and their application to specific urban or regional planning problems; and, within the framework of the course, is implemented by means of a group-based project.
