Learning Outcomes : Upon successful completion of the course, the student will: • have a basic understanding of the structure, molecular motion, and intramolecular and intermolecular interactions in the solid, liquid, and gaseous states of matter and how these affect the macroscopic properties of single or multi-component systems in or out of thermodynamic equilibrium. • be able to use equations of state, solution models, phase diagrams, and the principles of thermodynamics, kinetic theory, and physical chemistry of interfaces to solve quantitative problems of estimating the structure, composition, and physical properties of material systems that appear in process and product design. • have realized the possibility of quantitative prediction of material properties from their chemical composition in a systematic way using quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics tools, and be able to apply these tools for deriving equations of state and heat capacities of ideal gases and crystal lattices.
