The principles and measuring techniques used in geophysical exploration. Basic techniques for measuring gravity on the Earth s surface, in the sea, from the air, and from space. A review of the introductory aspects of the theory of gravitational potential and the modeling of the Earth s gravity field parameters. Instruments and techniques for measuring gravity, as well as corrections and reductions of gravity measurements. Surveys and gravity networks. Field data acquisition techniques, treatment, representation and interpretation of the gravity data for geophysical exploration purposes. Practical examples of diverse exploration applications, such as petroleum, groundwater, and environmental engineering, are shown by case studies.

Learning Outcomes : Knowledge and understanding of basic topics in the cognitive field of physical geodesy with emphasis on special topics thereof. Problem analysis and solution methodology. Execution of complex calculations. Instructions for creating algorithms. In general, the course aims to provide the necessary knowledge for understanding geodetic works and processes that refer to large areas. The reference systems, reductions and calculations, both in planimetry and altimetry, provide students with the necessary information and develop skills related to the execution of geodetic works concerning the establishment - measurement - calculation and documentation of an integrated geodetic reference system. Upon completion of the course, students acquire a basic understanding of advanced methods and technologies of modern geodesy used in general applications of geophysical and environmental research aimed at measuring and analyzing the physical properties of the Earth to help solve basic problems of applied engineering (e.g. exploration of natural resources and energy sources, soil studies, changes in groundwater levels, geophysical impacts, etc.). In addition, they acquire skills and become familiar with the methods and geodetic ""tools"" used along with advanced mathematical techniques, to solve various scientific and practical geophysical problems arising from the combined observation of the Earth from space and from the topographic or marine surface where the Earth s gravity field acts. The course emphasizes practical and theoretical training in the most important applications of geophysics to the aforementioned problems.
