The lectures focus at a theoretical level on the following thematic areas: 1. Basic concepts of natural resource management 2. Principles of Sustainability 3. Principles of Environmental Law (Principle of Prevention, Principle of Precaution, Principle of Disclosure, Access to environmental information) 4. European Directives of Environmental Impact Assessment 5. International experience in Environmental Impact Assessment 6. Greek institutional framework for environmental licensing (Legislation, EIA procedure, Appeal to the Supreme Court) 7. Impact Assessment Techniques (Impact Matrices) 8. Life Cycle Analysis 9. Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment (Institutional framework, process) 10. Remedial Measures (Planning, Adaptation, Evaluation, Validation) 11. Analysis of EIA/EIA case studies In the context of thιs course, an assignment related to the development of an EIA study of an existing project/plan is given to the students to work in groups.

Learning Outcomes : Upon successful completion of the course, the student develops skills and is able to: • Understand the institutional framework of environmental permitting at European and national level • Understand basic concepts of environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental impact assessment, • Analyze the state of the natural and anthropogenic environment of an area, 2 • Estimate and evaluate environmental impacts on the natural and anthropogenic environment during the construction, implementation and operation of a project and/or activity using methodological approaches, • Respond to all stages of environmental permitting of a project, an activity, a plan or a program (e.g. consultation etc.), • Draft an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) in accordance with the applicable institutional framework.
