In the first part, the combustion processes in Otto and Diesel engines are analyzed, initially at a descriptive level, and subsequently in greater depth (combustion process, combustion chambers, Otto mixture preparation, Diesel injection systems). Various modern combustion methods are also analyzed with the aim of minimizing emissions. The main purpose is to enable understanding of the mechanisms that lead to pollutant formation inside the combustion chamber. The second part focuses on the particularly timely issue of emissions from reciprocating engines, both pollutant emissions and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as the most important devices/methods for addressing them, e.g., anti-pollution systems (such as three-way catalytic converters for Otto engines, soot traps, SCR systems, etc.).
